Kaori

Kaori (カオリ) was Tetsuo Shima's love interest in both the Akira anime film and manga

versions. Her role differs from the manga, but her personality remains constant as that of a shy and timid girl.

Background

Manga

Kaori is one of the many survivors of Akira's psychic destruction of Neo-Tokyo. She is first introduced approaching an agent of the Great Tokyo Empire for medicine and food so she can help her ailing father. She is then coerced into joining the Empire as a sex slave for Tetsuo Shima, the real leader of the Empire. Kaori is later shown to be the only survivor when her fellow concubines fatally overdosed from taking Tetsuo's drugs. Her kind and motherly personality earned her the role as Akira's caretaker, as well as Tetsuo's closest friend and confidant.

Akira (Anime)

In the anime, she sided with Tetsuo, despite his reckless behavior. She was badly injured in the confrontation between Tetsuo and the clowns following his escape from the hospital and theft of Kaneda's bike. When Tetsuo started his uproar over Neo-Tokyo, she recognized him through the news on TV, and followed him.

She found him in the stadium and, when his powers manifested and caused his body to warp and expand into grotesque proportions, she was engulfed in his flesh and crushed to death by his oversized organs.
