Hyuga Hanabi (日向ハナビ) is a shinobi from Konohagakure's Hyuga clan.

Naruto Episode060-218

She is the youngest daughter of Hiashi, and the younger sister of Hyuga Hinata. She is also the sister in law of Uzumaki Naruto. And lastly she is the aunt of Uzumaki Boruto, and Uzumaki Himawari. She is the second heir to the main branch of the Hyuga Clan. As an adult, she is the team leader of Team Hanabi as she trains Kakei Sumire, Suzumeno Namida and Izuno Wasabi. However her team is added a new samurai member name Kurogane Tsubaki, when Sumire goes to officially work for the Scientific Ninja Weapons Team.

Background

Naruto Shippuuden 166-022

Hanabi as an Infant with her family.

Hanabi was born on the day of March 27th when her older sister is three years old. She is the younger daughter of the Hyuga clan's head, Hyuga Hiashi and his unnamed wife. She was born a few months after the Hyuga Affair incident as she never got to meet her late uncle, Hizashi. While always looking up to her older sister, Hyuga Hinata, and wanting to spend more time with her, but Hinata's duties as the future heir to Hyuga clan made it hard for the two sisters to have any quality time together. Watching Hinata and seeing her as strong yet so kind, Hanabi was inspired to be more like Hinata and began training all by herself. While often watching Hinata train secretly, she also spied on Hinata as she would often leave home to watch Uzumaki Naruto from a far, making Hanabi wonder why her older sister admired the young social outcast so much.

Later on, after seeing Neji harm her older sister during a training session including seeing the Cage Bird seal on Neji's forehead. Hanabi was horrified to witness this, to learn about the hatred that the Branch house of the clan felt towards the Main house, and the usage of the Hyuga's cursed seal in order to keep the Branch members under control. During sparring sessions between Hanabi and her sister, Hanabi's talent began to shine, amazing everyone by being about on par with her older sister. Later, as Hinata's progress began to be questioned after a strong beating by Neji during a training session, the Hyuga Elder suggested training Hanabi to be the heir. Ultimately, a duel was held between Hanabi and Hinata to decide the future of their clan. While Hinata found an opening to win the fight, she was hesitated to strike down her little sister, allowing Hanabi to counterattack and win the duel, much to Hanabi's distaste at hurting her older sister.

Ultimately, as Hanabi showed more talent and confidence than her elder sister Hinata, their father decided to make Hanabi the heiress to the clan, and instead focused his grueling training regime on her instead of her sister, whose training he considered to be a waste of time. As Hanabi continued to train under her father, by believing the words of her grandfather that all a tied to a unchanging fate, Hanabi became determined to prove herself worthy of being the next head of the Hyuga Clan.

Personality

Hanabi teasing Hinata

Hanabi teases Hinata about Naruto laughing if he hears her stomach growl

Hanabi Hyuga's character was not expanded on in the manga very much. In the anime, Hanabi seems to be portrayed as a quiet, polite and respectful young girl, although she seems to open up to people a bit easier than her older sister. Unlike how Hinata once was, Hanabi is more confident in her abilities. In the anime, since a young age, Hanabi adored her elder sister, by always wanting to spend time with Hinata and became sad when she learned the harsh conditions Hinata had to endure. When Hanabi learned of the harsh nature the Hyuga lived by and that she would be expected to lead her clan, Hanabi gradually became more hardened, viewing similar to Neji's original in pre destined fate and its inescapable nature, determined to not let her clan down as the future leader.

Later on, after seeing her sister rise beyond everyone's expectations and grow so strong, Hanabi regained much of her previous joyful demeanor. Also in the anime, she gained a great deal of respect for the social outcast, Uzumaki Naruto. This cause Naruto to not only change the views of both Neji and Hinata for the better but to inspire them. This also convince Hanabi of being able to shape her own fate, along with learning that her older sister has been in love with Naruto since her childhood. She is also supportive of Hinata's feelings for Naruto, as shown two years after the war. While preparing for Naruto and Hinata's wedding, it's reveal that Hanabi is a "fashionable young woman and extravagant in her tastes". At Naruto and Hinata's wedding, she happily welcomed Naruto in to the family while holding a portrait of Neji. She even calls Naruto "Big Bro" after he had rescue her, and Hinata from Toneri. In the novel, Hanabi's playful, child-like personality didn't start until after the death of Neji; she was previously very serious and only cared about training.

She is shown to dote on her niece and nephew Himawari and Boruto by gushing over them whenever they came to visit the Hyuga estate. At the same time, she encourages them to be independent and only ask for help with their problems only after they tried everything else. Hanabi also takes great pride in her cooking and doesn't like it when Boruto prefers Hinata's cooking over hers. Overall, Hanabi still has a strong compassion for Boruto, by strongly wanting to see him succeed. To which, she has developed a strong bond with Sarutobi Konohamaru, who also sees Boruto as a younger brother.

As a sensei she is considered by her students, as strict and fire up. She takes her students training very seriously and enjoys helping them. She talks to Sumire a lot by telling her that despite her clans history she sees that time has changed dramatically for her village. However she isn't afraid of scolding her students for fighting rouge shinobi or bandits without permission when they aren't suppose to. Including when they would gotten hurt a lot worse and not just having minor injuries. Ironically she scolded Wasabi and Namida for a long time as her students were on their knees. As the leader of Team 15, Hanabi proves herself being extremely strict and tough on her students, seen when she urged Namida to hone her skills in Water Release, and refused to take easy on the young kunoichi despite Namida's cries for help. Nevertheless, Hanabi strives to help her students achieve their full potential, and enjoys spending time with them, even when off-duty. However she doesn't like when her students don't show teamwork or treating missions like a contest.

Appearance

Hanabi The Last

Hanabi as a young adult.

In the manga, Hanabi Hyuga has dark black hair like her father. However in the anime, Hanabi has dark brown hair instead. She has long parted bangs with a single lock of hair falling into her face. She also has large, white eyes a trait shared by all members of her clan. In the anime, her eyes have a hint of lilac in them. In Part I, she was seen wearing a sleeveless, blue v-neck shirt, with mesh armor underneath and blue shorts and sandals. During Part II, Hanabi had cut her hair short and wore a modified version of her original outfit and had a tan vest jacket with white wristbands on both hands. Her footwear was shinobi sandals with white bands around her ankles.

In the Invasion of Pain Arc, while Hanabi was with her father for political matters, she wore a light yellow kimono with light violet painted textures, a red-orange obi with a green cord around, and white tabi with sandals. Hanabi also had a pink flower hair clip attached to her hair on the left side.

Two years after the Fourth Shinobi War, her hair has grown significantly longer, reaching past her back and both of her bangs are tied in a pink ribbon. She wears a tannish long sleeve kimono shirt with red-orange flames on it with a matching skirt, along with a white strap around her waist.

Years later as an adult, Hanabi has grown noticeably taller and now wears her hair with shorter bangs in the front reaching her chin to frame her face while the rest of her hair which she keeps in a ponytail and reaches her shins. She wears a yellow kimono blouse, and a traditional long red skirt held closed by a simple white obi.

Abilities

Though not much is known of her full capabilities, her father Hiashi noted at the time he delivered Hinata into Kurenai's care, that Hanabi had shown much more potential than her older sister and was more suited for the role of heiress. Even though she was stronger than Hinata during Part I, Hiashi noted that Hanabi is not that strong against Neji. Her growth-rate greatly impressed her entire clan, making many wonder if she should be the heiress before it was even brought into official question. In later years, her talent was further shown as while still training to become the heiress, she also became a sensei for Team 15, proving her abilities to multitask.

Taijutsu

From a young age, Hanabi showed quick growth and strong instincts in hand-to-hand combat, greatly impressing her clan. Despite not originally not gaining intense training from their father at the time like her older sister, Hanabi soon became able to fight on par with Hinata through sheer solo training. In the anime, she was able to defeat Hinata in their sparring duel (albeit this partial stemmed from Hinata's reluctance to harm her sister). Between her raw talent and rigorous training from Hiashi, Hanabi gradually became very proficient in Gentle Fist. In the anime, during a duel with Boruto, she showed considerable grace and precision, able to effortlessly dodge and parry all of his attacks used alongside his shadow clones. In the anime, she could perform several of her clan's advanced hiden techniques, able to block or repel anything in her immediate vicinity using the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven, or attack a target from a distance using the Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm.

Byakugan

As a member of the Hyuga clan, Hinabi possesses the Byakugan: a dojutsu kekkei genkai which grants her an almost 360° field of vision (with the exception of a small blind spot), x ray vision and the ability to see the chakra pathway system. While a common trait for her clan, Hanabi's Byakugan is noted by her father to be very powerful, almost as great as her older cousin Neji's. Hanabi herself is also very confident about her Byakugan, claiming that its perception is as good as any fully grown Hyuga's. Otsutsuki Toneri described her Byakugan as being "very pure" and specifically targeted her Byakugan in order to awaken the Tenseigan. During her duel against Boruto, Hanabi's Byakugan showed a noticeable resistance to flash bombs, quickly recovering to counter Boruto's attempted sneak attack.

Naruto (Part I)

Chunin Exam arc

In the anime, as Hanabi continued arduously pushing herself to become stronger, she learned of Hinata entering the Chunin Exams. Later on, Hanabi learned to her horror that Hinata was badly injured facing Neji. When Hanabi went to visit Hinata in the hospital, she was amazed to learn that Hinata was determined to change herself and refused to give up even against a stronger opponent like Neji, by wanting to be more like Naruto.

Later, Hanabi watched Neji's match against Uzumaki Naruto during the final round of the Chunin Exams with her father, and was amazed to see that he had learned powerful secret techniques on his own. In the anime, Hanabi was also amazed at Naruto's determination to exceed everyone's expectations of him, much like Hinata. It was also indicated that she knew nothing about the failed attempt to kidnap Hinata that had resulted in Hizashi's death, mostly because she wasn't born at that time, as she did not know how her father could still be alive after the Land of Lightning demanded his death.

Pre-Shippuuden Filler arc

Hanabi appeared two more times in the anime; at the funeral of the Third Hokage. After the Invasion of Konoha, while Hanabi became conflicted by the various believes of destiny, she was shocked to see Neji, a branch member who openly despised the Main House, willingly help Hinata train and also voice his changed opinion about destiny thanks to Naruto. She was also seen at Tsunade's inauguration as the next Hokage, standing with her cousin Neji and his team-mate Tenten.

Naruto Shippuuden (Part II)

Hidan & Kakuzu arc

In the anime, as Hanabi began to struggle learning the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven, Hanabi began to get discouraged. She later heard about how much stronger Naruto had become in facing the Akatsuki and began inspiring everyone to follow from his example. Hanabi was amazed to watch Hinata do just that, mastering more advanced Hyuga techniques all in the effort of keeping up with Naruto.

Invasion of Pain arc

During Pain's attack on Konoha, Hanabi was away with her father during a mission. In the anime, while she and her father were dealing with political matters between the Hyuga and allied clans, they received word about the attack. Upon returning the village, they were horrified at the level of destruction following the attack and even more surprised to hear that no one died. What truly amazed Hanabi and her father was that it was Uzumaki Naruto who saved everyone, after he was protected and inspired by Hinata who risked her life to help Naruto. Later, seeing Hinata grow so strong and determined yet retained her kindness, Hanabi was very happy for her sister in finding her own path, becoming determined to do the same. In the spirit of this, she cheerfully asked her father to train her, to which the father proudly agreed.

Fourth Shinobi War arc

In the anime, Hanabi was able to proudly wish her sister good luck before she headed off to fight in the war. Later, when Madara trapped almost everyone in his Infinite Tsukuyomi, Hanabi appeared alongside a still alive Neji in Hinata's dream, spying on the latter and Naruto. She was free from the genjutsu after Naruto and Sasuke ended the war.

After the war was over, Hanabi attended Neji's funeral.

Blank Period

Many years later in Konoha, her father Hiashi was giving an invitation by Naruto and Hinata to attend their wedding. On the day of the wedding, guests start arriving at the ceremony to be held under the Hokage Monument. Hanahi is shown with her father, while approaching Naruto and Hinata as the older couple hold their hands tightly. In the anime, she says her sister looks so pretty in a wedding dress.

Epilogue

Boruto Naruto Next Generations (Anime)

When Naruto along with Boruto and Himawari visit the Hyuga estate, Hanabi greets them at the gate, at first chastising her father for gushing over his grandchildren in such an embarrassing way before she herself rushes to them and begins fawning over them. As Naruto, Boruto and her father meet, Hanabi plays in the courtyard with Himawari.

As Boruto claimed to have manifested his Byakugan, it was decided to test the theory. Hiashi insisted on a sparring match with him for the speculated-Byakugan to show itself. However, out of concerned for her father's bad back and her nephew's wellbeing due to Hiashi's lack of restraint, Hanabi insisted that she spar her Boruto instead. While Boruto eagerly accepted, Hanabi quickly dominated the match. While Boruto managed to make Hanabi fight relatively seriously, he soon was defeated, with everyone concluding that Boruto has not awakened the Byakugan. Afterwards, it was decided for Naruto and his kids to spend the night together, to which Hanabi eagerly cooked a meal for everyone. As Hanabi plays with Boruto and Himawari after hearing that Boruto likes Hinata's cooking better, she and the two kids were about to be scold by Naruto because they were still eating. Later, finding her nephew pouting, Hanabi came to comfort him, insisting to keep working on things and take comfort on having her to come to for help if things get too hard.

After the Genin Exams concluded, Hanabi went to the Ninja Academy, where she became the leader of Kakei Sumire, Suzumeno Namida and Izuno Wasabi in Team 15.

When the Byakuya Gang began gaining support from several villagers in Konoha, the villagers began acting out against companies accused of corrupt actions. Hanabi joined her fellow ninja in working to pacify the situation. Ultimately, it was discovered that several of the protesters were under genjutsu, leading to her and other shinobi dispelling it. This, along with Naruto's speech, helped calm down the protests.

As the next Chunin Exams drew near, Hanabi continued to prepare her students. Later, they were assigned a mission to capture all the escaped animals from Fire Park. Hanabi had her students handle all the small animals while she went for the larger, more dangerous ones. She was then approached by Sai Yamanaka. Having been told about the special circumstances around Sumire Kakei, Sai would regularly meet with Hanabi about Sumire's development ever since the Nue incident. Ultimately, it was decided to let Sumire reconcile with her friends at her own pace. Later, as Hanabi went to find the last creature on her list, a giant white-maned wolf, she discovered that her students were attacked by it. Deciding to see first how the genin would handle the beast before she helped, Hanabi was pleasantly surprised to see them take down the wolf, to which Hanabi congratulated them.

At night time, Hanabi speaks to Shino and Team Ebisu about the new generation. But she gets drunk with Konohamaru. When she learns that he favors Boruto just like her. However she accidentally causes Shino to get drunk after he releases to drink alcohol, due to this it causes his insects to be released.

Ultimately, she presented her students with entrance forms to take the exams. On the day of the final exam, Hanabi watched Naruto combat Momoshiki's Tailed Beast Ball from a safe distance away from the tournament's arena alongside Sumire.

Film Appearances

Naruto Shippuuden movie 7

Two years after the Fourth Shinobi War, Hanabi is first seen encouraging Hinata to give Naruto the new red scarf she had made for him and to confess her feelings to him. She then started to playfully tease Hinata by telling her instead of just giving Naruto a new scarf she had just made for him, that she should just make her self more pretty for him while swinging around her new Kunai that she had just shown Hinata earlier. Hanabi is then kidnapped by a puppet from an army led by a mysterious man from the Otsutsuki clan, who had failed to capture Hinata due to Naruto's intervention. Naruto, Hinata, Sakura, Sai, and Shikamaru are then deployed to retreieve her. After capturing her, Toneri transplants Hanabi's Byakugan into himself, using them to awaken the Tenseigan. While being bandage up, Hanabi silently shows body language by tightly holding Hinata's hand begging her older sister not to let Toneri keep using her eyes. Once Toneri is defeated, Hinata retrieves Hanabi's eyes and implants them back into her sister. Upon getting her eyes back, Hanabi starting calling Naruto "Elder Brother" by telling him and Hinata that she'll always be there to interrupt their conversations. While at the exit, Hanabi was surprise to see Naruto use his Reasenshuriken technique to break through the dimension in order for him and Hinata to have their own exit to get out of. Hanabi was lastly seen being present at Naruto and Hinata's wedding, by holding up a portrait of Neji in their group photo.

Boruto Naruto Next Generations Manga

In the anime, she spends time with her father and sister during Parent and Child day. She even battles Hinata to see how well her new family relationship is with Naruto.

Some time later, as Namida's only effective technique began harming her team-mates and clients as much as the enemies, Namida resolved to develop a new technique. Hanabi, glad to see such new drive in her student, began pushing Namida through rigorous exercises to improve her chakra control and steal her resolve against conflict. While eventually these efforts helped Namida improve significantly, the team's next mission pitted them against bandits whose Namida's new technique useless. When the bandit's leader stole a sacred document from the clients, Hanabi raced after the foe, followed by Nue. When Sumire's personal summoning was called back to her, Hanabi realised the real threat was back there and quickly turned back. Upon arriving, she learned that Namida's training had unknowingly developed a new, more advanced screaming technique. However, as her student was still underdeveloped in using this technique, Hanabi resolved to continue pushing Namida.

She was unable to help her students with a mission with Team Konohamaru because she was on another mission by herself at the time.

Some time later, after Sumire officially resigned from Hanabi's team to join the Scientific Ninja Weapons Team, at the Seventh Hokage's request, Hanabi's team was given Kurogane Tsubaki, an exchange-student samurai, as a replacement. While going on a mission to capture some criminals, Hanabi soon returned to find that her team had already captured the targets. Hanabi quickly and angrily scowled her students for taking such a risky action as they took minor injuries from the reckless action and reminded them that they were not allow to fight criminals unless she gives them permission.

Some time later, with her father's birthday fast approaching, Hanabi suggested her family throw the Hyūga leader a party. She was later approached by Boruto, asking for advice on what to get Hiashi a gift, only for Hanabi to admit she wasn't sure either. At the party, Boruto came up with idea of a family photo, which Hanabi joined in to take together.

Later when her students cause a mission failure and kept treating missions like a game to challenge Team Udon, Hanabi canceled their next mission to have them learn about Teamwork including to save lifes as a part of the mission. She scolded them about this and told them to see what they are missing as they ain't in sync. Including to calm down due to stress of not going on the joint mission with Team Udon before leaving.

Soon after she finally talks with Hinata and Boruto to see if Himawari wants to be a Ninja. She asked Hinata if she and Naruto asked Himawari about it and when Hinata say no, she was surprised. When Himawari came home Hanabi stressed how the Hyuga clan wanted Himawari to be a Ninja, since everyone in the family already is. Therefore she gave Himawari a flyer for her to attend the Ninja Academy for one day to see if Himawari really wants to become a Ninja.

In the anime, after learning of Kara, Hanabi was sent to Iwagakure to inform them of the threat. Hanabi also reported that the doctor who worked with Ōnoki on the Fabrications was also a member of the organisation. While Kurotsuchi was concerned that her grandfather was also a member of the organisation, Hanabi noted that it was highly unlikely, but rather his previous research was being used by Kara. In the anime, Hanabi attended the memorial service for the fallen people of the Fourth Shinobi War.

In the anime, Hanabi participated in the coordination efforts lead by Shikamaru when Ōtsutsuki Isshiki invaded the village.

In the anime, following the defeat of Isshiki, a personal Chūnin Exam for Konoha was set up. Following the exam, Hanabi joined her students and their friends at Lightning Burger to celebrate Wasabi and Denki's respective promotions.

In the anime, with the new setup for genin teams no longer requiring a jōnin leader once a genin of said team is promoted to chūnin, Hanabi's duties to Team 15 were concluded. She then returned to the academy as a teacher. She attended the welcoming ceremony for the newest students, one of them being Himawari.

Naruto and Hinata's alone time at night time at a pond location showed that Hinata was so depress about Hanabi's kidnapping, that she blamed herself for fixing Naruto's red scarf instead of finding Hanabi. Hinata even though of herself as a horrible older sister, but Naruto encouraged her saying that she is a great older sister when it comes to caring about Hanabi, to which Hinata thanked him for his kind gesture. It turns out that Naruto also wanted to save Hanabi, and not because of his love for Hinata. Trivia

  • The name Hanabi means fireworks. While her surname "Hyuga" means "place in the sun" (日向).

According to the databook(s):

  • Her birthday is March 27, & her bloodtype is A.
  • Her favorite food is bananas & milk. While her least favorite food is mitsuba.
  • Her hobby is training with her father.
  • Her favorite word is ???.
  • Her star sign is a Aries.
  • Despite Kishimoto designing a post time-skip version of Hanabi that is revealed in Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth Full Power Ninja Chronicles spin-off, she appeared in her Part I design in Hinata's Infinite Tsukuyomi dream in the manga. But the error was corrected in the anime by having her in her Part II appearance.
  • As the younger sibling, there is a possibility she will be placed in the Branch Family and receive a Cursed Seal, once the next heir turns three. However, because her father felt that Hanabi was a more suitable heiress than Hinata, and because there have been several changes in the way the Hyūga family works, it is possible she might be exempt from this. Since she is a girl however, it is also possible that she was never meant to have a Cursed Seal in the first place, as Japanese tradition usually only allows men to start a branch family.
  • She and Choza are the only two Naruto characters to have a same sex gender team. Hanabi has an all girl team while Choza had an all boy team.
  • She and her nephew both share the same birthday.
  • Even though her team got disbanded, Naruto still considers Hanabi's student Kakei Sumire a Konoha shinobi regardless as she is now working for the Scientific Ninja Weapons Team. Even to the point that she was considered to become an official Chunin level kunoichi.
  • In Part I, she shares the same English voice actress with her sister, Hinata.
